I’m currently in the process of redesigning a website I’ve already redesigned. Not to get too in depth, but after playing around with this WordPress blog, I’ve come to the realization that WordPress offers a lot more functionality than iLife. Granted, it wasn’t a very difficult realization, but still I’m currently trying to develop a strategy for taking these next steps.
Step 1 is simple. I need to install WordPress on our server. I plan on installing it to a folder labeled test and messing around with it there. From there I’ll be customizing the look and feel of the website, making it more Web 2.0-friendly, working on making it so the website is expandable, and pleasing the bosses with content along the way. I know the basic gist of what needs to go into it, the major work is rethinking what people get out of it. Right now our Website is a convoluted web of click here, go there, find this, notice that, and not exactly friendly to a Google-Optimized world. It’s my fault, I went with iLife’s “iWeb” program to design it. While the website was leaps and bounds better than our old Frontpage-designed site, it still isn’t as great as it could be. I want to advance us beyond the current humdrum emergency services website. I want to make it more like a Blog. In order to do this, it’s going to take some imagination… but as I’ve already indicated, I am up for the challenge.
I’ll keep you posted on the redesign, I won’t reveal too much yet until after I at least have a stable test version. I’m hoping to make it look classy, yet simple. I want people to be more inclined to comment, send us information, or link up with us. iLife just lacks the ability to make a real businessy website. Sure, there are some hacks you can do to make it more functional, but WordPress has the pizazz that’s necessary to really wow a visitor, draw them into your site, and make them a believer in what it is you’re trying to share with them.
